These hockey fans came together in a beautiful show of support for a country and its citizens at a time when they needed it most.
While the Canadian national anthem isn't usually played during hockey games between American teams, a singer performed "O, Canada" at Wednesday's NHL game in Pittsburgh, following the deadly shooting attack in Ottawa earlier that day.
Fans throughout the arena, who'd gathered for the game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, chimed in and sang along with singer Jeff Jimerson, according to USA Today.
"I thought it was a special tribute tonight," Penguins coach Mike Johnston said of the moving moment, according to the New York Daily News. "Certainly when those events happen, they strike everybody."
Pittsburgh's Consol Energy Center arena filled with voices singing the anthem while maple leaves were projected onto the ice in solidarity with those in Ottawa, including its hockey team, the Senators, whose game against the Toronto Maple Leaves was postponed due to the attack, Today.com reported.
The lone gunman responsible for the attack was killed shortly after the rampage, and identified as 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau by Canadian authorities.
