Pop star Katy Perry will get her chance to live in a former Roman Catholic convent after a judge on Wednesday invalidated the property's sale by five nuns to a restaurateur.

The case had pitted Perry, daughter of Protestant pastors and one of the top-selling pop stars in the world, and the archdiocese against the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The nuns, all aged between late 70s and late 80s, once lived in the convent and two of them wanted to sell it to Los Angeles restaurateur Dana Hollister.

The archdiocese filed a lawsuit last June, arguing that the two nuns did not have the authority to sell the property to Hollister.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Bowick approved the archdiocese's motion to block the sale to Hollister, voiding the purchase documents and deed. She said the nuns did not have the authority to sell the property and that even if they had, they did not properly validate the transaction.

Representatives for Hollister did not reply to requests for comment.

The archdiocese said it was "gratified" by Bowick's ruling in a statement, and added that it was still under contract to sell the convent to Perry.

"The Archdiocese was forced to take legal action to protect all the five sisters from being taken advantage of by the Dana Hollister transaction," it said, adding that it will continue to provide care for the nuns.

Perry, who rose to fame with the hit song "I Kissed a Girl," offered to buy the 8-acre (3-hectare) Roman Villa-style property for $14.5 million.

The nuns had rebuffed the 31-year-old performer, accepting a competing $15.5 million bid from Hollister, who wanted to convert the former convent into a hotel.

Attorney John Scholnick, who represents two of the five nuns, told Reuters he was "disappointed," but emphasized that the ruling only invalidated the sale to Hollister and did not authorize the sale to Perry. He said there could be an option for an appeal.

Manhattan's Birdland, the Mother of All Jazz Clubs, has a new way of getting paying customers' asses into seats at 6 pm a few evenings a week. Just don't expect Ron Carter, Sonny Rollin, Herbie Hancock or Diane Krall to be performing. Instead, the Birdland Early Bird (Music) Specials allow gifted young musicians to add a gig at the world's landmark jazz club to their résumés. And if the fans of the partially knowns only partially fill the tables, it keeps the cash registers clinking more lucratively then if the room were filled with the sounds of silence, either melodic and monetary.

Last Thursday evening at 5:45 pm. Birdland was packed to the nines for 27-year-old Joe Alterman's Birdland debut, a significant event for him. Ten years ago when Joe was a senior in high school, his dad and he flew to Manhattan from Atlanta to catch what turned out to be the legendary Oscar Peterson's final New York appearance. Joe has never forgotten Peterson's powerful presence and dreamed about performing at Birdland ever since. Now, two CD's and several jazz festival appearances later, that dream was coming true and his father (and mother) sat facing him, pleased as punch at their son's success.

Alterman is hardly a keyboard Joey-come-lately. He's been tickling the ivories since he was five -- following his brothers to bluegrass festivals until his father plied him with bluesy jazz records that were a better fit. I first heard him at Dizzy's Club three years ago when he was enrolled in NYU's graduate music program and I've been an Alterman groupie ever since. My fellow fans include jazz authority Nat Hentoff who believes Joe "represents the past, present and future of jazz," and that "he'd be able to hold his own even with greats like Parker, Gillespie, Monk and Davis." Moreover, an actual Beatle was impressed enough with Joe's playing at a Friar's Club brunch to walk over to Joe's upright and ask Joe where he'd learned the tunes he was playing because they reminded Paul McCartney of his father.

Joe is handsome guy, with enough dark hair to pass as a Kennedy. He appeals to the square, the chic and the trendy. In a nicely fitting dark suit, white shirt and greenish-blue silk tie, he looks like a hip, happy accountant, or would if such a beast existed. Joe's an exuberant performer, beating the rhythm of the song he's playing with the foot not pressing the piano pedals, shaking his shoulders while boogying up and down the piano bench. He's polite too, and listens respectfully as bass player Nathaniel Schroeder and drummer Doug Hirlinger's play solo.

Alterman's attracted significant musical mentors including Les McCann, with whom he co-wrote "The Theme," a lush, sensuous, romantic melody, and sassy, senior saxophone bluesman, Houston Person, who plays that tune so seductively that it makes you want to snuggle forever, but only with someone you love. Alterman's set opened with "Give Me the Simple Life," followed by "I Heard it on the Grapevine" and "Time After Time." He pays homage to Les McCann with "The Theme," to Oscar Peterson with "Kelly's Blues," moves forward in time with Carole King's, "Take Good Care of My Baby," and shifts backwards with an angular arrangement of "Blue Moon." His strong but gentle fingers dance over the keys and his heart and brain speak to the strings in the piano harp. The Amazing Kreskin, seated beside me, found Joe's artistry truly amazing.

Other impressive talents I've heard at Birdland at 6 pm include Pianist Matt Baker, Blues Singer Carole J. Bufford, Vocalist Marissa Mulder and the bluesy Rob Silverman Quartet. The cover charge sounds steep at 25 bucks, but if you Google "complementary and discounted Broadway and Off Broadway tickets," several organizations that offer members the same performance for considerably less cash will pop up right before your very eyes. Furthermore, Birdland's food and drink minimum is a bargain $10 and their food is fresh, filling and tasty. The early show at Birdland is well worth paying to see.

Some people use bug spray, others use a boot but there's a more humane way to catch spiders.

My Critter Catcher has been making videos about its product since 2012, but since Insider picked up on it and posted a video of the amazing arachnid eliminator on its Facebook page on April 12, it has gone viral, receiving over 61 million views and over 800,000 shares.

So what gives this device a leg (or eight) up? It’s the insect-friendly invention’s brilliantly benevolent nature. Instead of killing a spider (or wasp, grasshopper, roach, scorpion or any of the other pests the gadget’s site claims to be able to nab) this product allows one to catch and release. The no-kill device is also appealing to people who have a fear of creepy crawlers, being that it’s on a 25.5-inch-long stick, which offers plenty of distance between human and bug.

My Critter Catcher, which resembles one of those grabbers used by the elderly, consists of a handle, and the stick, which has a circular brush on the end of it. To get rid of a tiny unwanted house guest, you squeeze the nozzle, opening the brush, place it over the insect and then let go, like so:

Once the creature is trapped in the brush’s bristles, you can take it outside, squeeze the handle again and release it back into the wilds of your backyard:

“Many people regard the presence of insects such as spiders inside a building as a nuisance. However, many such people do not wish to kill the insect and would prefer to have a convenient and simple way of disposing of the insect without killing it,” Tony Allen, My Critter Catcher’s inventor, wrote in the patent.

According to an article written by Linda S. Rayor, assistant professor of Entomology at Cornell University in How Stuff Works, killing spiders is bad news. The fierce hunters help keep the ecosystem in check by eating insects -- despite their creepy appearance which freaks some people out..

In fact, Allen, was inspired to make his product because his son was afraid of spiders, according to Business Insider.

Two male penguins who only have eyes for each other are in a new home where they can be true to themselves.

King penguins Stan and Olli were previously part of a breeding program at the Berlin Zoo, The Local reports. But they weren’t into it.

“We don’t know if they are ‘gay,’” Berlin Zoo spokeswoman Christiane Reiss told The Huffington Post. But she added that they showed interest “only to each other,” never to females.

Since they weren’t particularly useful at breeding, zoo officials decided to move the penguins to Tierpark Hagenbeck, a zoo in Hamburg, where they’ve been living since April 2.

That zoo has experience with same-sex mates. Juan and Carlos, who are Humboldt penguins, also live there, the German Press Agency reports. Juan and Carlos even incubated an artificial egg together, according to the Hamburger Morgenpost. (Though if there was ever an occasion for the penguins to hatch a real egg, anecdotal evidence suggests same-sex penguin pairs make excellent parents.)

Reiss noted that the Berlin Zoo has since acquired new male penguins from zoos in the Netherlands. They hope these penguins are a little more interested in breeding with what she described as the zoo's "lonely females."

While we’re happy these same-sex penguin pairs can stay together, it would be even better if the German government were as progressive as the zookeepers. Same-sex marriage is not legal in Germany, and same-sex couples cannot jointly adopt a child.

Over the years, bodybuilding has literally grown.

Bodybuilders are getting bigger, bulkier and more orange as time advances, and while it's a part of our culture that many of us don't really understand, bodybuilding -- especially the Mr. America contests -- reflects "a desired image of modern manhood," John D. Fair writes in the introduction to Mr. America: The Tragic History Of A Bodybuilding Icon.

If guys want to beef up to meet some modern standard of desirability, why do they look like a medical illustration of a person without skin, or that they've somehow turned themselves inside-out?

"As societal views toward the male body and physical culture evolved," Fair writes, "bodybuilders had to redefine themselves in light of the clash between revered traditions and concessions to current tastes. The Mr. America Contest, which once epitomized the aspirations of tens of thousands of weight trainees, was premised on adherence to time-honored values of health, fitness, beauty, and athleticism, while Americans -- and especially bodybuilders -- became obsessed with appearances and engaged in training practices and lifestyles that often subverted those ideals. By the end of the century, physique competitors and promoters seemed perplexed about what constituted a perfect specimen of manhood. Reckoning with these cultural questions became the foremost concern in modern bodybuilding not only in the United States but worldwide, since the Mr. America title, at least from the 1940s to the 1970s, was, like other aspects of American culture, a global icon."

It's interesting to see just how much these perceptions of pure fitness have changed over the past 100 years, thanks to advances in supplements, workout equipment and our understanding of how the human body works.

It seems people push these limits harder and farther every year, and when you look at the following pictures of guys at peak physical fitness over history (from a guy who looks like Vladimir Putin sucking in his gut in 1900 to the sinewy muscles on show in 2015, you'll see just how much things have changed.

Everyone knows there's only ONE way to eat corn on the cob correctly, which is horizontally. Luckily, fellow celebrity Bruce Willis has the technique down and could, maybe, one day teach the singer his moves:

Like the idea of raising backyard chickens but you’re not sure if the responsibility will ruffle your feathers?

Twin Cedar Farm in Acushnet, Massachusetts, will allow you to renting chickens, and if you don’t like it, you can quit cold turkey. It’s seriously duck soup.

“People like to find out where their food is coming from more and more these days. So it kind of gives people an opening,” Ella Magnuson, who owns and operates the farm with her husband, Alexander, told CBS. “The eggs taste fantastic. Nothing like [what] you get in the grocery store.”

According to the farm’s site, a six-month rental for $450 will get you a quality coop, 100 pounds of all-natural feed, two gallons of water, a feeder and two chickens.

"They're very social animals," Ella told South Coast Today. "You can't have just one."

The couple will also deliver everything to your home and offer ongoing support. After the six-month rental, there is a buy out for an extra $200 for those who want their rent-a-hens to become part of their permanent flock.

Some may write off the idea as bird-brained, but that's not the case. NBC reported in 2013 that due to the booming backyard chicken trend, hundreds of unwanted fowls were being dumped at shelters and sanctuaries after people realized how much work it is to care for chickens.

“Many areas with legalized hen-keeping are experiencing more and more of these birds coming in when they’re no longer wanted,” Paul Shapiro, spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States, told NBC. “You get some chicks and they’re very cute, but it’s not as though you can throw them out in the yard and not care for them.”

As for the Magnusons, the idea they’ve laid out seems to be working.

Last year they rented out 20 birds, two of which were to Shannon Smith, who enjoyed the experience so much, she kept her hens, telling CBS: “They [are] part of the family.”

The inmate, Wesley Evans, 20, was captured on Wednesday morning and was taken back into custody after an escape that lasted about 24 hours.

He is expected to face charges for the escape attempt.

Evans has been in jail since March 8 on charges of aggravated robbery, auto theft and arson. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a swollen hand.

It's true: You can literally blow up an apartment full of roaches, and the insects will be just fine.

Humans, however, are another story entirely.

Three people, including a toddler, were taken to a hospital after an overzealous attempt to spray roaches caused an explosion in their first floor apartment, according to the Asbury Park Press. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

Someone in the apartment was spraying so intently that the pilot light of the stove ignited the bug killer, leading to a blast that blew the windows right off the apartment, the paper reported.

"You had the right mixture of three elements: The chemical, the oxygen and the ignition source," Asbury Park fire department spokesman Garrett Giberson Jr. told Patch. "They sprayed a tremendous amount of Raid. There was so much chemical in the air that the introduction of oxygen just caused an explosion right away."

The only difference is, Peake will be running the race about 250 miles above everybody else -- in space.

Aiming to be the first man to run a marathon in space, Peake has been preparing for the big day for months. In an Associated Press interview published this week, the 44-year-old astronaut, who has been living on the International Space Station since December, said he’s now ready for race day.

“It's a great challenge that I set myself, and I'm quite glad this is happening later on in the mission,” he told AP.

Peake is no stranger to long distance running; in 1999, he completed the London Marathon in 3 hours 18 minutes 50 seconds.

Attempting the same distance in zero gravity, however, comes with a whole new set of difficulties.

“One of the biggest challenges I’ll be facing is the harness system,” he told The Guardian in December. “It has a waistbelt and shoulder straps. That has to provide quite a bit of downforce to get my body on to the treadmill, so after about 40 minutes, that gets very uncomfortable.”

“I don’t think I’ll be setting any personal bests,” he added. “I’ve set myself a goal of anywhere between 3:30 to 4 hours.”

Though Peake will be the first man to run a marathon in space, he’s not the first human to do so.

That accolade belongs to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who completed the 2007 Boston Marathon while on the ISS. She ran the race in just under four and a half hours.

However, as The Guardian points out, Peake’s marathon experience will be quite different from that of Williams: He’ll actually get to run virtually on the streets of London, and will have the opportunity to interact with his fellow competitors on Earth.

Peake will be using RunSocial, an app which allows runners to watch interactive, “mixed reality” videos of actual courses while on the treadmill.

As he runs, he'll be able to see an avatar of himself running at a corresponding speed along the London course. He’ll also see the avatars of other runners who are also using the app.

The "Titanic" director announced the expansion of the franchise at CinemaCon on Thursday. He confirmed his plans to release four new "Avatar" movies over the course of the next seven years with each installment intended to debut around Christmas of 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023.

“We’re making four epic ['Avatar'] films that stand alone but together form a saga. These movies were designed to be seen in theaters first,” he told the audience, according to Deadline.

“I’ve been working with the top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of 'Avatar' going forward,” he continued. “The environments, new cultures -- whatever it takes to bring it to life. From what I’m seeing of the art on the wall … in pure imagination is just beyond the first film. I’m speechless.”

Cameron originally intended to only make two sequels to the 2009 fantasy epic, which garnered immense critical and commercial acclaim upon its release, as well as pioneering new technologies in filmmaking.

“There is too much story and visionary ideas for two sequels,” Cameron said, via The Wall Street Journal. “So we talked to Fox and expanded it to three sequels. Now that the script work is finishing up, it’s not three. It looks like four. So after talking it through with our partners at Fox and giving it a lot of thought, we decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project.”

Not much else is known about the saga, except that Cameron is adamant about how audiences will experience it: in theaters.

“Our jobs as filmmakers is to keep making films onscreen,” he explained at CinemaCon. “We’ll continue to make this industry the greatest show on Earth. My producer Jon Landau and I are committed to the theater experience. Despite what the folks at the Screening Room say, I think movies need to be offered in the theater on opening day. So boom.”

If you've ever wanted to enjoy a leisurely meal with Russian President Vladimir Putin staring at you, here's your chance. All you need to do is travel to Siberia.

Welcome to President Cafe, an eatery dedicated to honoring the glory of Putin and Russia. The cafe, which is located in the eastern Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, opened last month.

Dozens of photos of Putin, from his youth all the way up to his prime ministership, line the cafe's walls. The menu, a photo of which was published in Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda, features a sketch of Putin riding a bear shirtless. There is even a life-size cutout of the president with which people can take photos.

If and when the restaurant receives its liquor license, it plans to serve a cocktail with vodka, grenadine and blue curaçao, which will resemble the colors of the Russian flag, cafe co-owner Svetlana Lautman told the publication. It will cost just 120 rubles, or under $2.

President Cafe is the first cafe in Russia that is fully dedicated to Putin, Dmitry Zhdanov, the cafe's other owner, told Reuters.

"I myself am a patriot, but I can see that not everyone is satisfied with their lives in the country," Zhadnov told Siberian online journal Sib.fm. "So we decided to provide people with a place where they can eat well and inexpensively, but also recall Russian achievements in a pleasant, patriotic atmosphere."

Some of the cafe's decorations may come across as a little offensive to some visitors, however. Step inside the bathroom and you'll see floor mats depicting the U.S. flag, on which patrons step when they wash their hands. Toilet paper has U.S. President Barack Obama's face printed on it. Pictures of U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are also mounted on the bathroom walls.

The door to a bathroom is labeled "NATO," the consortium of Western countries that was the Soviet Union's Cold War adversary. While Russia and NATO established diplomatic relations in 1991, their alliance remains tense. NATO countries are currently building their largest military presence in eastern Europe since the Cold War in an effort to counter an increasingly aggressive Russia.

But all of these gimmicks are "just business," and "nothing personal" toward the politicians, Zhdanov told Reuters. "I am neutral toward Western politicians," he added.

Everything in the restaurant seems to have a political tinge to it -- even the food.

"Someone asked us for chicken Kiev," a popular dish named after the Ukrainian capital, Lautman told Komsomolskaya Pravda. "At the President Cafe! We can make it, but we'll have to call it something different."

Russia and Ukraine currently have a strained relationship: Russian troops stormed into the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea two years ago, and annexed the area shortly thereafter. Subsequently, pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian troops began fighting, which the United Nations says has killed over 9,100 people.

Seventy-three percent of Russians trust Putin, according to recent opinion polls. While this figure is 10 percent lower than it was last year, it remains "stratospheric by Western standards," according to Reuters. Just 51 percent of Americans approve of Obama, according to Gallup's most recent weekly poll average. His highest weekly average was 67 percent in 2009, shortly after his inauguration.

A middle school teacher in East Bank, West Virginia, has been temporarily removed from the class after a video was posted showing him verbally berating a student.

The reason for the outburst: The 13-year-old student claims he saw the teacher watching porn alone in the classroom.

However, no evidence of porn has been found on the teacher's computers, according to the school's principal.

Jeffrey Province said when he entered his 6th grade math class on Tuesday, he observed teacher Thomas Yohn staring at his computer screen, WOWK-TV reports.

Province's mother, Carmelene Short, decided to go public with this incident and joined her son in a televised segment.

"I saw something no 13-year-old should ever see in a school," Province told the station.

Province reported Yohn to the principal, who apparently discussed the accusation with the teacher.

A short time later, Yohn burst into Province's English class, and confronted him in front of other students.

One of them secretly filmed the encounter and posted it online.

In the video, Yohn can be heard saying the following:

“Next time you open your big, stinking mouth, pal, I will write you up and send you to the office for coming into my room without permission. Is that clear?

“What I watch as an adult is my choice. You as a child wait in the hall until you’re invited into my room -- is that clear?”

Yohn also accused Province of threatening him.

"He tried to blackmail me," Yohn said in the video. "[Province] said, 'Oh, Mr. Yohn,' he said, 'I'm going to get an A this quarter or I'm going to tell that you're watching inappropriate things on TV and I saw it.'"

School principal Mike Wilkinson told The Huffington Post that Yohn's behavior on the video is "unacceptable," but wouldn't say if the teacher had been suspended.

"I can tell you he is not in the building," he said.

The porn accusation is being investigated, but so far, there's no proof it happened, Wilkinson said.

"Yohn's computers were seized and no porn was found on any of them," Wilkinson said.

The other is Darth Vader.

Donald Trump is a force to be reckoned this election season. He appears invulnerable. And the more you attack, the stronger he becomes.

Vader was eventually defeated, but will Trump experience the same fate? Only time will tell. Until then, the farce is with us.

Who knew watching a fish decompose could be so compelling?

In a new time-lapse video (above), released Wednesday by BBC Earth Unplugged, a John Dory and gurnard lie there like dead fish cause, well, they're dead. Their carcasses trigger a post-mortem feast attended by creepy crawlies -- and be warned that the maggot feeding-frenzy might not be on your menu of must-see YouTube.

Dermestid beetles are later joined by flies to dine on the John Dory, which is picked clean in three weeks. As for the deceased gurnard, the video explains that just the beetles partake, removing the flesh in about five weeks.

Flesh-eating beetles are often used by museums to clean skeletons for their collections. The beetles do a heck of a job on the fish bones in the new video.

Smells like a fortune.

A British couple is looking to cash in on their discovery of a large piece of whale vomit possibly worth more than $70,000.

The vomit, better known as ambergris, is a valuable resource used by perfume makers to help a scent last longer.

Gary Williams and his wife, Angela, found the pricey puke while walking along the beach near Morecambe Bay in Lancashire.

“It was down a section of the beach where no one really walks,” Gary told the Mirror. “It smells too bad, though. It’s a very distinctive smell, like a cross between squid and farmyard manure.”

Sounds delightful!

Scientists believe that ambergris forms when a whale swallows a foreign object, like a squid beak, according to National Geographic. The whale will grease up the object to ease its exit from the body.

“It feels like a rock hard rubber ball," Gary, 48, added. "Its texture is like wax, like a candle. When you touch it you get wax sticking to your fingers.”

Despite being known as whale vomit, it is now commonly held that the ambergris is discharged from the rear end, National Geographic explains.

Gary and Angela, 49, wisely wrapped up the lump in a scarf and confirmed that they had struck gold whale vomit.

The couple is fielding offers from potential buyers in France and New Zealand, the Guardian reports. The trade of ambergris is illegal in the United States and Australia as part of broad restrictions on whale exploitation.
