Don't Shoot Police Cars, Even With A BB Gun

A Laurel teenager is being charged as an adult with first-degree assault in the shooting of a police vehicle with a BB gun while it was being driven by an officer, Prince George's County Police said Saturday.

Andre Christopher Rivers, 16, of the 13500 block of Attleboro Court, was arrested Friday evening after an officer driving along Contee Road "heard a projectile strike his driver's side door" about 6 p.m. and immediately called for backup, police said in a statement.

"The patrol officer believed he was being fired on and immediately requested a search of the area," the statement said.

The officer was not injured.

Shortly after, officers stopped Rivers near the intersection of Contee Road and Edinburgh Lane and recovered the BB gun, police said. He was taken into custody without incident.

Rivers is charged with first- and second-degree assault, second-degree assault on an officer, using a dangerous weapon with the intent to cause injury, reckless endangerment and two counts of malicious destruction of property.

As of Saturday, Rivers was being held on a $75,000 bond, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 301-937-0910.
