Berkeley police are searching for an archer who shot an 8-year-old girl in the leg with an arrow at UC Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science museum on Tuesday morning.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the girl was on a field trip with her third grade class. While playing on a life-size model of a whale outside of the center, she was struck by the arrow, seemingly out of nowhere.
The girl was taken to Oakland Children's Hospital with the arrow still lodged in her thigh, reported CBS. She is expected to recover.
"Poor little girl," said Geoff Vassallo, who was accompanying the students, to the Chronicle. "She comes to have a nice day at the science hall, and she gets stuck with an arrow by some idiot."
According to local news blog Berkeleyside, police said the arrow appears to be one that would be fired from a crossbow.
Authorities searched the center and the surrounding hillside, but found no trace of the archer. Police do not know whether the shooting was intentional or an accident.
