Wingsuit Racers Go Into The (Really) Wild Blue Yonder

OK, so full-contact skydiving was fake.

But we've got an airborne sport that's real and perhaps almost as crazy: wingsuit racing.

On Friday, Red Bull wrote on YouTube that it had staged a "first-ever wingsuit competition format," in which four wingsuit flyers race each other in a four-gate slalom course starting at 7,000 feet. The contestants flew as fast as 160 miles an hour and opened their parachutes at 3,000 feet, according to the description accompanying a video of the race.

Andy Farrington won Thursday's competition premiere, which took place over Oakdale, California. Katie Hansen finished first among the women in the 52-person field.
