We've learned about the speed of sound and the speed of light, but what about the speed of smell? More specifically, is it possible to outrun a smell?
In the video above, the brilliant folks of AsapScience look into this important matter, calculating whether or not it's possible to crop dust a room without getting a whiff of your own poison.
Smells travel through diffusion, a process in which particles move from an area of high concentration to low concentration, until reaching a state of equilibrium. But every fart is unique, based on its composition (what food you eat), your gut bacteria and the kind of air you take in. "Farts are like snowflakes, each with its own variants," AsapScience explains. Beautiful, no?
As the video explains, figuring out whether you can outrun a fart requires several calculations based on these unique characteristics and the environment in which you're standing. Whether you can outrun your own toot or not is mostly out of your control, though you may be able to influence the speed at which it travels by the foods you eat.
